Nestled at the foot of Mt. Iwate, Koiwai Farm is a veritable playground for nature lovers and gourmets alike. The farm is open to the public almost all year, offering special events and activities with each changing season. One of the interesting perks of going in the off-season (mid-November to mid-April) is free admission to the "Makiba-en" tourist facilities.
Koiwai Farm is first and foremost a place for fun and unusual activities. Some of the activities include horseback riding, archery, or even making simple woodcrafts. When you are all worn out from observing farm animals in shows and rolling down the hills in a life-sized hamster ball, it's time to enjoy some of Koiwai's gourmet food. There are several places to eat, depending on your appetite or taste. Koiwai is most famous for their dairy products, which you can even purchase in the gift shops. There is even an on-site museum chronicling the history of the vast farm. It is incredibly easy to spend several hours at Koiwai, so plan accordingly. If attending during the off season, remember to dress warmly! Iwate can get very cold.
