The Golden Pavilion, otherwise known as Kinkaku-ji, is one of Japan's most famous temple's you must visit while passing through Kyoto.  The walk around the garden is very nice and peaceful.  Yukio Mishima's, The Temple of the Golden Pavilion is a must read before visiting this site.  Seeing the temple in person brings the story to life.
