Hodad’s

Be the first to review

This is the best burger joint in all of San Diego. Established in 1969, Hodad’s has become a Southern California classic that espouses the surfer/skater vibe of Ocean Beach.
You will know that you have arrived when you come to the back of a line that often stretches from Hodad’s door past the liquor store next door and around the corner. Trust me, the wait is worth it. I suggest taking turns waiting in line while members of your party can explore the many funky shops that line Newport Ave.
Once inside, you will likely be greeted by a sensory over load; loud, raucous music blares, hundreds of license plates decorate the walls and intoxicating smells waft from the bustling kitchen, manned by local young people.
The sensory overload continues once the food arrives. The flavorful patties, thick slices of bacon and generous condiments make these burgers exceptional. Their onion rings and fries are equally laudable. Even still, the meal may well be eclipsed by the delicious shakes top with huge scoops of ice cream. Try to conquer a single burger with fries and a shake if you dare. Try to do so, substituting the single burger with a double burger if you double dare.
If you are still unconvinced, Hodad’s was featured on Guy Fieri’s Food Network show, Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.
In addition to its original Ocean Beach location, Hodad’s has recently opened two restaurants downtown and at Petco Park.
