About

Shugakuin Imperial Villa is a detached imperial palace located in northern Kyoto. The size of this villa is almost 8 times of that of Katsura Imperial Villa, another detached imperial palace in Kyoto. What is interesting about this imperial villa is that part of it is separated by small pieces of rice land, which are owned by farmers living nearby. The Imperial Household Agency actually purchases rice from these farmers!
Visitors to this villa need to make appoitments in advance, which can be done online or through Imperial House Agency’s office at Kyoto Imperial Palace. Passport is needed to make reservation. However, if you use a Japanese passport, you may need to wait longer ( propably a month).
