The Ainu Museum is an open air museum, which shows the culture and lifestyle of Ainu people. The Ainu is the indigenous people of Hokkaido. The museum is a replica village consisting traditional houses of the Ainu. It is located along the Lake Poroto, and the region is called Porotokotan, meaning ‘large lakeside village’ in the Ainu language. The museum offers free hourly performance with traditional Ainu folk dances, which was designated a UNESCO intangible cultural property in 2009.
