Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve protects a curved marine bay on the southeastern coast of Oʻahu in Honolulu. The area became Hawaiʻi’s first Marine Life Conservation District in 1967, and visitors come for reef views, swimming and snorkeling in a carefully managed natural setting.
Every visitor watches a short educational video before entering the preserve. The City and County of Honolulu limits attendance to support conservation, while lifeguards, freshwater showers, restrooms and snorkel rentals are available for a safer and more practical day at the bay.
The preserve is open Wednesday through Sunday, with entry from 6:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and all visitors leaving by 4 p.m. Non-Hawaiʻi residents age 13 and older pay a $25 admission fee, and advance reservations are highly recommended. Accessible facilities include a wheelchair-friendly tram and free beach wheelchairs.
